8k

Today I ran an 8k.  My time was 43:57, so sub-nines, that's good.  My brother-in-law's girlfriend ran it with me, so that was cool.  She also made me some vegan chocolate chocolate chip cookies that were amazing!  I think baked goods taste so much better when someone makes them for me, especially when they say that they are vegan and and I feel like they couldn't possibly be.  Ok, happy running!!

Vegan Fast Food

Well on my way to work yesterday, I decided to stop at McDonalds to get some orange juice and while I was there I went ahead and ordered a hashbrown, only to find out later that this food item is not vegan. These are the ingredients I found when I looked it up online (after I ate it, of course):

Hash Brown: Potatoes, vegetable oil (canola oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, natural beef flavor [wheat and milk derivatives]*), citric acid (preservative), salt, corn flour, dehydrated potato, dextrose, sodium acid pyrophosphate (maintain color), extractives of black pepper. Prepared in vegetable oil ((may contain one of the following: Canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil with TBHQ and citric acid added to preserve freshness), dimethylpolysiloxane added as an antifoaming agent). *CONTAINS: WHEAT AND MILK. (Natural beef flavor contains hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk as starting ingredients).

All this for a hashbrown!?! Then, this morning on the radio, NPR had a report saying that McDonalds is finally getting rid of trans fat. So on top of the fact that the supposed hashbrown, it was probably cooked in hydrogenated oil. Sigh. The first two months of my veganism were awesome. I was super strict. I pretty much only ate things that I made. I've gotten a little more relaxed lately, and, based on the hashborwn, I'm not sure it's a good thing.

Conclusion: No more fast food. I can make my own hasbrowns with a potato.

Exercise for today: Spin Class (I skipped running, I actually hid from my running group by staying in my car for 10 minutes waiting for them to leave. Then I just drank a couple of sips of coffee and waited for spin to start. So I just sat around the gym for about 45 mintues. What's wrong with me?)

First Post

I am currently procrastinating at work so I thought I'd set up this blog during what I guess could be called my lunch break.

I ran the Country Music Marathon in Nashville in April (my first half marathon) and I plan to run the Disneyland half marathon on August 31, 2008. I entered the lottery for the New York Marathon in November and signed up to potentially raise money for the American Heart Association. I hope I get in.

I go to the gym 4-5 days a week for 1-2 hours, but running is new. So at some point during 2007, I decided that it was time for me to enter a race. Training has been fun on the good days and frustrating on the bad days, but I love it because people ask me how my training is going. It's nice to talk about the thing that I spend a good portion of my day doing. Noone ever asked "how's going to the gym every morning going?" They'd just tell me I was crazy and that's be the end of it.

Also, I'm vegan so I might talk about food and how I think it affects my running. I'm blogging to keep up with my progress and hopefully get some good feedback.

Gym today:

Weights Class, circuit, 3 minutes intervals

Run, outside, 30:40, approx 3.4 miles,
